Debra Holzhauer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science, Philosophy and Religion at Southeast Missouri State University. After completing my B.A.at Illinois Wesleyan University, I then earned an M.S in Political Science at Illinois State University, Afterwards, I then attended Purdue University to get my PhD, with a concentration in Comparative Politics and International Relations.

After teaching as several educational institutions, I finally arrived at Southeast Missouri State University in 2004 where I have taught a wide variety of classes, including: Comparative Political Systems, Introduction to American Government (occasionally), American Foreign Policy, International Organizations, Politics of the Developing World, Women and Politics, Government and Politics of Western Europe, Middle Eastern Politics, Political Violence and Terrorism, Senior Seminar in Political Science (covering topics like Comparative Environmental politics and Human Rights), various other topics classes (like Latin American Politics), and First Year Seminar (UI100).

I am also the academic advisor for the Model United Nations club (which regularly attends the American Model United Nations conference in Chicago, IL) and one of the advisors for the Beta Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega at Southeast. In the past, I also served as the advisor for Southeast students attending the Sue Shear Leadership Academy.

In my spare time, I have been involved, in the past, with the local Zonta and Moms Demand Action chapters. I am also an avid reader. Besides reading history books and biographies, I love to read mysteries (especially historical ones) and science fiction (some of my favorite authors are Ben Aaronovitch, Simon Green, Charles Stross, and Daniel O'Malley). I also love anything Jane Austen.

Best Advice for Students

I have three major pieces of advice for students. First, don't underestimate the importance of getting eight hours of sleep at night. It's good for your physical and mental health. Second, attend class regularly and take notes. This helps you to stay more engaged in class. It also helps you to narrow down what you need to study when exams roll around. Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions. Only by asking questions, can you get help from your instructors, tutors, etc.....

Surely, in the light of history, it is more intelligent to hope rather than to fear, to try rather than not to try. For one thing we know beyond all doubt: Nothing has ever been achieved by the person who says, ‘It can’t be done.
