YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF TEACHING:

I believe in preparing students to become working professionals in whatever field they choose. It is our job as professors to ready students for the world outside of college. I believe in a fun and positive learning environment, while still holding students accountable for their actions. I want my classroom to be a place where students feel comfortable to take risks, make mistakes, and experience failure. Trying and failing is where true learning happens. Therefore, I am very clear with students about my expectation for them, while still fostering a warm and positive atmosphere for learning.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TEACH?

I have a great love for singing and theatre and have always enjoyed sharing that love and gift with others. It is very fulfilling for me to watch students make revelations and grow as artists. Art is also a refection of reality. By studying an art form, students grow as human beings as well. I chose vocal pedagogy, because am very interested in the science of singing. I am fascinated by the combination of art and science that are reflected in voice lessons.

CREDENTIALS/CAREER PATH

I started out as a professional opera singer in Philadelphia. I have always played piano and started getting hired as a music director. I always loved musical theatre, but didn't know anything about singing or teaching the musical theatre voice. I decided to pursue my DMA to learn more about musical theatre singing and teaching contemporary voice. I now consider myself a musical theatre specialist. I still regularly perform as a singer, in both classical and contemporary styles. I am very active as a music director, most recently, I was the music director for An American Hero at the New York Musical Festival.

BEST ADVICE FOR STUDENTS

Work as hard as you can. If you have a goal, go for it. Don't let anyone stop you. Also, remember that happiness is a choice. If there is something in your life that you want to change, you CAN change it. Begin taking steps toward change. It may not happen right away, but it WILL happen if you work for it!
